Event Review: Decadence New Years Eve (Sub.Mission Dubstep)

Article by Ethan Baer
As 2011 came to a tremendous close, all I could think about was how extremely lucky I was to be in Colorado, taking part in what was one easily of the biggest, best, and most extravagant dubstep events I have ever attended. Pairing up to bring us this spectacular event were Triad Dragons and Sub.Mission Dubstep. Triad Dragons is known throughout North America for the massive EDM events they throw, primarily their trendsetting, annual “Global Dance Festival” at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater. Sub.Mission Dubstep is one of the premiere U.S. dubstep promoters, holding a wide range and scale of events from fantastic weeklies throughout Colorado (including their unrivaled Bassic Fridays weekly at the world-reknowned Beta Nightclub), to massive events such as Flux Pavilion and Doctor P’s North American Tour, and of course, Decadence NYE 2011.

Unicorn Kid & Discopolis
By Aaron Rush
It’s a quiet Tuesday night in Camden and there’s only a vague mention of rioting on the tubes. Heading to the Barfly seems like a good move, even better when you hear that Unicorn kid is playing a final gig before heading off on his European tour. Unicorn Kid is getting a massive amount of hype at the minute, and for a damn good reason. Developing a reputation for his retro synth dub and lion headwear, he’s always had a unique niche in the genre; it’s with good reason that he controls and manipulates this niche almost as much as one of his game boy advance sound chips.

Tuesday night? What did I do Tuesday night? I moshed, I danced and I fell a few times but man did I have a damn good time. JusCollege’s .EDU tour with 16 Bit was definitely the show to be at this week.
The Arcade x Feet For Ransom
By Aaron Rush

Walking round Shoreditch on a Saturday night you know there is going to be something going on around every corner. Like walking to the underside of a middle-class restaurant to find Concrete, what looks like a completely under furnished basement. On closer inspection, all the chairs and tables are made of polished plywood, the lighting isn’t UV or synthetics, but around 200 candles and low lit lights, the kind you’d find in an old mine. This arguably isn’t exactly the kind of place you’d expect up and coming promoters Feet for Ransom to be working.
But that’s what these guys are great at, from working around Surrey and London, time and time again FFR have been working to bring a different kind of night to the standard messed up stuffy rave holes that you get littered around London. From working in Guildford promoting dance and dub culture to a much bigger audience to the resident “Arcade” nights in Concrete, The lads are going from strength to strength. Breaking into London is hard enough for new promoters, but from starting Feet for Ransom last November at Backline in Guildford, they have already broke the ice.
With a keen and varied mix of DJ’s: FLN, Ahadadrem, Liberate, IO, FLN, Okota and William Biggs. Arcade has got all the bases covered. Speaking to Jonny G “We aren’t just trying to put on a night; we want to play decent, credible music from all sides of the scene. I’m loving the new garage sort of vibe coming out at the minute, big vocal cuts on ambient beats. We want FFR and Arcade to be something different; there are so many talented and passionate DJ’s and producers that need to be heard”
It clearly shows, when you walk into Concrete, the room is already getting busy before 10, Will Biggs is setting up for AhadAdream and FLN. The room was stacked with old arcade machines, Jonny showing mad love for Bespoke Arcades who hooked him up. All free and with about 350 of the best SEGA and Nintendo classics (They win extra points because they had my favourite- Altered Beast). The music is a mix of Dub and dance. Getting the crowd ready for Ahadadream who breaks in with Dylan Francis “Master Blasta” and keeps going with some heavy moombaton and Breakbeat. By this stage the Room is rammed, the queue for the bar seems only matched by the queue at the big screen to play Street fighter and FLN jumps on the decks, and slams it, without question these guys are ones to watch for the future.
FFR and Arcade have clearly got a long future ahead of them, with an ever growing fan base and a passion for the music, along with a talented DJ section backing them, you’re sure to see these guys running the show at a set near you. Oh and by the way, for the first time ever…I completed Altered Beast.
Check out Arcade at Concrete again on the 15th October. (Collab TBC)
